I have a candidate for Roach of the Month. It's a 1983 YZ490 that I bought and resold to my friend Lee when I found an 87 YZ490. The 83 is pretty solid mechanically, but as you can see someone decided it would look better in blue with a camo seat cover. Also, everything from the forks, wheels, engine, frame, and swingarm were painted gloss black.
God bless the youth of this country. LOL!

Hi Mark, I was visiting the folks back at the farm last week when I walked by the old woodshed and through a window I saw the handlebar sticking up from the TS 100 that was handed down to me by one of my older brothers. I remember riding this bike but I can’t recall what led to it being dumped in the back of the shed. I suspect it broke down and one of us took it apart and couldn’t repair it or lost interest. I know around this same time I also found access to a 125 TM (I could sneak it out when my bros weren’t around) so my interest in the 100 was probably waning.
When I get some time I will try to pull it out into the light of day. (The only access is through the side window).
Thanks for the site!

I'd like to submit my 73' Suzuki TM250 for Roach Bike of the month. I found the bike on Craigslist and after watching the price steadily drop I couldn't take it any longer. It's got "custom" side plates, A KZ900 clutch cable and a custom paintjob on the handlebars and carb. The swingarm rocks from side to side, the rear spokes were so loose the wheel just flopped, the exhaust has a hole the size of your fist in it and the air filter is a t-shirt. It actually cranked, idled and shifted fine.

Here is most likely my very first bike, a 1965ish Montgomery Wards 50cc Moped. The first pic is me age 10 in 1968. Pic two is what I found in a metal salvage pile about 12 miles from my childhood home. Being that I never have seen another one since I was a kid, odds are good this is what happened to my original Moped. Slight rust hole in the gas tank :) Everything is frozen with rust and seat is bare springs on top. As you know, I had to have it.

I've got a roach for ya!
Uncertain of the year, cb360 "chopper" out of Birmingham, Al. I would love to slam them right now but I'll be nice...We bought it from a kid who actually bought it from a "chopper builder" as is, and was riding it this way. The kid had know idea how very sketchy it is really is: - A small guage linked dog chain is your break pivot arm, lots of play in it too
- Rear tire is dry rotted, and the kid dident even notice when he bought it
- Rear tire rim is spaced out with about 7 washers, oon ne side only, the other is hollow galvanized-looking tube.
- Axle is a long stud bolt (looks like an extra footpeg on one side)
- Smarty grinded the paint off and then cleared the tank with burrs sticking out of the paint
- Chopped and "welded" exhaust like a pro it seems, as they have leaks
- Frames a Kawasaki
- Motor mounts are made from angle iron, about to break at any moment, and spaced out by nuts acting as washers
- Chain tensioner is a skateboard wheel
- Self tapping screws used to hold on just about every exterior piece of the bike: fender, battery box, headlight, gastank, seat....
- Swingarm was from a sportsbike and extended about 6 inches with scrapmetal and shitty welds too.
- Pepboys special headlight (fog lamp)
- Front end is missing breaks, fork seals, and everything else that makes it safe
and only God knows what else!
I really hope that this guys goes out of business soon, because the only thing that saved this kids life was us buying it off of him. This poor kid saved up using graduation money to buy this "one-off" piece of crap for $1500. And for some "shop" to sell stuff like this, is going to get somebody killed.

This roach is in fact a true treasure. It's a hand-brazed Yetman racing frame built by Yetman Motorcycles of Beverly, Mass. Best known for their road-racing motorcycles, Yetman made a very small number of these Honda S90 racing frames in the late 60's. I discovered this one on ebay, 3000 miles away. The seller refused to ship the bike, but with a well-placed bribe I convinced him to strip it down to the bare frame and UPS it to me. I had to let him keep everything else, including that spiffy Whizzer bicycle gas tank. The Yetman is one of the jewels of my collection.

I had acquired a IT490, and my buddy said his dad had one just like it sitting in his garage he wanted to sell. I said ill give ya 50 bucks. Well he said it was a "436", the funny part was, that he thought the code stamped on the airbox lid said 436, but it was 43G. Turned out to be a 1985 Yamaha IT200. He also said when he had it running years ago the throttle would stick open, the grips he put on were a bit too long and were hanging up on the handlebars. I put a new spark plug in and ever since it has ran perfect. It was spray bombed and had a custom rear fender.

I just drove 12 hours yesterday to buy this 73 elsinore site-unseen. The seller was totally open and honest, describing the fuel tank as having "some welding" on the right side. That's some welding alright. Whoever took the dent out of the tank completely cut the side out, then welded this panel in. If this makes the roach list make sure to include a request for help from anybody who thinks they can fix the tank.... Still, overall the bike is fine shape, and was a good deal.

Got 'er off the bay for $100 in Sep 2007. Listing said it was an 80cc, but cast into the right side of the cylinder - where it should be - quite clearly was "123cc". Of course, the prototype exhaust system was what did it for me Listing also said "it turns over". Kinda knew I was in for a project when we arrived to pick up and the owner had kindly, "...left it in the yard so you can load 'er right up...", and we found dried grass clippings on the rims. Got 'er back to the shop, figured I see if it had any spark. Pulled the plug ok, but the brown was more rust like then hydrocarbon residue from proper jetting. Went to push on the kickstarter and - you guessed - she didn't move :( Pull the head - only had five of the six hold down nuts installed, piston wiggled. Applied some WD40 and let 'er sit for 30 minutes. Removed the prototype exhaust system and the six hold down nuts and good news, the cylinder and cereal box base gasket slid right off. Yep, both bottom and top ends are - how you say - tight? It was then I knew why the owner was not home at the agreed time and - by cell phone - had me give the $100 to the neighbor But, she's mine now and on the road to recovery.

Ingenuity Award - Honorable mention goes the previous owner who couldn't find anything remotely close to an exhaust pipe for this bike and decided to use parts from an old Mississippi riverboat boiler and a generous length of pipe to get those pesky 2-stroke exhaust fumes away from the rider.

It looks a bit rough but is perfect for a starter bike or for someone who just wants to have a blast off-road. It is very fast and powerful, I have had no problems keeping up with the pack. The suspension is sound and has resevoir shocks in the rear, I don't know if they are factory or not. The front shocks do leak a bit of fluid but they are o.k.. I jump this bike all the time with no problems. The clutch is a little hard to pull back, I don't know if it is the cable or what else it could be. It works fine and does not slip or anything like that. The handle bars are bent a bit but with some leverage they could be good as new. I think this may have been an enduro or something because it used to have guages, rearview mirrors and lights. They are all missing now. It needs a new intertube in the front. and the back tire has a slow leak. the tread is good front and back. It is a 2-stroke with a mixer. It will start after just 2 or 3 kicks the first time and the first kick after its warmed up. This bike is beat up but runs great. 1979 Honda CR250

| Hi Mark,
Attached is 1979 Honda CR250 "Roach Bike". Part of large volume deal, bike obviously missing some parts. Bike has incorrect KTM or other Euro rear wheel with Sun rim. Please notice the special handmade shock extenders bolted on to bottom eye of the street/trail bike shocks. Many riders have complained about the stock Showa shocks and replaced them immediately with Fox Air shocks. Can you imagine riding with THESE shocks in the whoops, or jumping ?
Regards,
Perry Sconzert

Ingenuity Award - This bike receives an honorable mention due to ingenuity in welding square tubing to streetbike shocks to extend it's length and to let us all know you really don't need to pay $200 for FOX air shocks on EBAY...any old shock will work fine. Pure brilliance!

1981 Montesa Cota

| Hi Mark,
this camo 81 349 montesa cota ran but would not shift when i got it. when i took the clutch cover off to check the shifter i found the crankshaft was snapped in half just past the primary gear and the whole flywheel weight and outer shaft was gone... the gas tank had burned through on the pipe and started a fire in the wire loom, and of course that nice spray and hand brushed camo paint job.... lots of work but worth it in the end.

Kawasaki / Honda - Thing

Get the bug spray, we've have a "True Roach!!!" |
Click To Enlarge Click To Enlarge
| Here's a true roach candidate! We are a motorcycle salvage yard in Michigan and this is a bike we received with a Kawasaki motocross front end and steering neck welded to a CB 360 frame. The instruments are from a Suzuki, the seat is from a moped, the rear wheel is a Yamaha, and the high-performance exhaust is homemade! The customer said that he rode it on the ice and hillclimbed it (notice the ice tires and ice rear fender!) When he dropped it off, he wanted to keep the shocks and six-foot swingarm for his next project, so he gave us the premade strut to hold the bike up!

Here's my sheep in roaches clothing. I spotted this bike on E-bay a while
back and couldn't figure it out. It was advertised as a 'Husovarna' Sweden
XL350E CG. Long story short, no one bid on it so I made a low ball offer,
thinking it was a C&J. The lady accepted and said after it was a C&J. Turns
out to be a big bore XL350 with cam and porting and a vintage C&J frame.

Saw this on EBAY. Made me laugh so I placed it here for your enjoyment The motor is 250cc and will run with work. I played around with this bike for a while and had it running but was never able to ride it. It needs work.
Note: Forward mounted Thermal Phase shocks; Bultaco tank and custom seat graphics. Say the word and I'll give this our highest "5 Roach" rating>

I reall enjoy looking at the bikes on your Roach of the Month page. There's a lot of potential out there. Here is my candidate, 75' TM250M, with before and after photos. Bought it up in Oklahoma, and cleaned it up for a contest at last year's Vintage Days at Mid-Ohio. Only aloud to spend $500 on the restoration, hence the 500 on the sideplates. Lots of elbowgrease!

Here's my Roach candidate.78 Suzuki RM125.100 seat,Kawasaki(?) green paint on entire machine, engine assembled with Cheerios card board gaskets,a steel plate cut with a torch as a mystery spacer ????? Hope they didn't burn down the neighborhood when they got drunk and did this! Only saving grace was a DG head, and reed cage......was it worth the trucking cost from across the country......maybe...
Ingenuity Award - This bike receives an honorable mention due to ingenuity in using a Cheerios box to make a base gasket.

When we first laid eyes on this "budding" beauty I "JUST (couldn't) SAY NO!". She was "fully loaded" with some very choice stuff: Carefuly pecured front # plate,Fox shocks, aluminum silencer, custom body work and frame. The owner/stoner said he"just had it bored out to a 250 but then it started smokin' to much...." I think he "started smokin' to much"!!!!We went to kick it over to test for spark and it blew a pound of dirt and fox tails in my face. A TRUE ROACH! Somebody get the bug spray....and some herbicide

Click To Enlarge | Here's a picture of a '75 Hodaka Super Rat.Emphisis on "rat". Other than the regular neglect, this bike has graffiti scratched in the tank, and a rather unique foot operated clutch. I'm not sure that you can see it in the picture.Someone wrote, in yellow junkyard marker, "RB" on the seat pan. My son said that it meant "root beer".I think alot of regular beer had to do with it. She should rate 4 roaches. Thanks,

Click To Enlarge | Mark , I picked up this "Cherry" locally. Notice the hybrid pipe. I think it's an F T F ( Flying Turd Factory) with special streetbike expansion chamber grafted to the original header pipe. Once I kicked the mice out of the intake and checked it out the engine it is actually complete and free.
