|
|
I have a fiberglass DG tank that I`d like to use on my 74 cr125m. I`ve read that the new fuels will eat away the old fiberglass. I`ve also read that Caswell`s two part sealing kit is the best product to use to prevent that problem. The only question I have unsolved is what kind of problems I should expect around the petcock area. Is there some way that I can completely prevent the fuel from coming into contact around that area? What is the best practice or am I being overly concerned? Is this really possible to do properly, or must I just spring for a new Clarke RC tank and call it a day?
Thanks,
Jon |

use aviation fuel. It does not have ethanol. But you can and should also just drain the gas.
Av Gas doesn't clog jets either after a month of sitting like crappy car gas.
People who say it will hurt your engine do not know squat about it. I have run it in all my bikes from a penda 150 to a Maico 490 and in my race car (twin cam lotus). It works fine. It is cost effective. It doesn't go bad. = |

Thanks Dave and Psteil,
Probably not selling though Dave, as this tank is the crowning touch on my DG bike. I'd sure like to have confidence that the sealer will work with a hole going through it and won't erode in time. Draining the tank is a must do idea for sure. I am worrying about nothing here or is there something special I can do to ensure the sealer works around the petcock hole?
Thanks,
Jon |

| Hi Jon. The Caswell sealant works well, but I still run race gas in my bikes, just to be sure... and I drain all of the gas at the end of the day. I have a DG replica tank built by Holly in Japan, but I ride with a Clarke tank. I haven't sealed the Holly tank because I don't intend to ever put gas in it, but I have sealed a couple of my Rickman tanks and Penton tanks. Several years ago, before I knew of the ethanol problem with fiberglass, I had the throttle stick wide open on my Rickman/Triumph when the fiberglass resin dissolved and coated the carb slide. I have had a couple of plastic tanks painted by a VMX'er in New York, and they have turned out great. I coat the insides of those tanks with Caswell's as well. Best wishes - Jim Roble |

Holly replied to my inquiry and sent me a link to their web page detailing their DG reproduction tank. Near as I can figure from $600 to $800 gets one. Now, I would definately trade my original for one of these puppies
Very pretty
