CALVMX / AHRMA @ Glen Helen (REM) (3/22/09)

On a cold and rainy Sunday Morning, my son Spencer and I took a trip up to Glen Helen Raceway to watch a joint CALVMX / AHRMA race on the outstanding REM track. I good friend had told me about the event at Glen Helen, which I thought was very interesting, since up to this point vintage racing at Glen Helen was the exclusive domain of SVRG. (Southwest Vintage Racing Group). A tip of the hat to whoever was able to get a date there.

Temperatures were in the mid to upper 40s, which is way too cold for most of us Southern Californians (I'm a Kansas transplant but been here over 30 years and long ago lost my tolerance for cold). It rained pretty much the whole way up, but let off around as we neared the track. Luckly for us since we didn't bring an umbrella or raincoat.

As we arrived I ran into a whole bunch of guys I haven't seen for over 2 years when I took a hiatus from vintage racing. I've been healing up from a pretty good crash back at the old Amago track and even though I raced a few times after the injury, I continued to crash due to the lack of strength in my right arm. Anyway, it was sure good to see these guys and I promised quite a few that I would be back out racing soon.

Track prep was outstanding, but the morning rain had made it a bit muddy for practice and Ironman. However, as more and more bikes got track time, it dried up a bit and made the day a little safer.

The track was extremely vintage friendly, a good long start to sort everyone out, wide multi line corners, no whoops and just a couple of vintage friendly tabletops. Frank Vrettas and Mark Arsenault put on a great event, but not without the help of Erica on scoring, the start guy, the gate guy and all the flaggers. My hat is off to them for spending the day in the elements so others could enjoy themselves.

As usual I brought my camera and took around 350 photos, of which I selected 125 of so I thought that looked cool. Got a "Crash and Burn" sequence compliments of a Maico rider. Be sure to look for that below. I did take a moment to seek the guy out to make sure he was OK, which he was. Found out that crashing isn't that bad when you're on someone else's bike. :)

Photos are free for your own personal use and I encourage you to copy them. One day, you'll be able to pull them out and say, see grandson or great grandson, I once was as crazy as you. :) Donations are welcome however and can be made on the main swapmeet page.
