 1973 Yamaha ATMX 125
Back in December, during the annual "Christmas Wish List" to Santa, I asked Santa for a 1973 ATMX. A few days later, Santa in the form of John Bergener of Roswell, NM, offered to sell me his.
So, my son Spencer and I took a 5 hour drive out to Arizona to pick it up, met up with John and brought it home. Thank you John for giving me such a good deal on this little gem.
This bike is somewhat outside of what I'm collecting, but I wanted it for two reasons. One, it was Yamaha's first serious attempt of putting out a 125 race bike. Yes, it's an enduro with a GYT kit but a lot of guys cut their teeth riding this bike and two, I saw this model raced back in 1973 by a guy named Hank Spaulding at Fort Riley, KS. Until the TMs and CRs came to the track, he won a lot of races on this bike.
It needs a few things and probably should be restored, but for now I'm adding few pieces as I find them and just enjoying it. Man, these bikes were tiny!

The bike you see here is also known as an AW, for Adolph Weil. It has about nine inches of travel at both ends good travel, we might add. The big thing is the powerplant. It's pure Maico power all the way. Strong, torquey and no flat spots anywhere.
Everything you see here has been around for years. But they now give you the excellent triple-row clutch standard. The good one—that small unit that riders have been paying big bucks for.
As far as total effectiveness goes, the stock 400 Maico is a devastating motocross weapon and immediately regains its customary slot at the top of the handling throne.| | Rick Sieman

| 1974 Husqvarna CR 250 MAG - 6 speed conversion
This bike was just completed. I built this to be my personal race bike, but after a 7-month build, my schedule will not permit me to race right now. I'm not sure about my schedule for next year, so I am offering it for sale.
It is the ultimate Mag racer - brand new from the ground up. Very few race built Mags have the 6-speed gearbox. Along with the extra gear, you also get the benefit of the much improved clutch and shift drum design from the later GP engine.
This bike has the MK Mag frame, but uses the 2042 engine cases for the 6-speed set-up. I brought in the resources of John LeFevre of Vintage Husky for the brand specific expertise in building this 6 speed motor. The engine also has all new bearings, seals and top end with 10 minutes time on the motor. It uses the VM-34 Mikuni set-up.
The chassis, wheels, suspension, and body parts have all been rebuilt, upgraded, or replaced with the best race components.
The bike has original shoulderless Akront rims using the stock rear hub and a larger CR 400 front hub for better stopping. All laced with new Buchanon stainless steel spokes.
The bike has a new Thor aluminum swingarm, new aluminum rear brake arm, new aluminum body Works Performance shocks (180-210 lb rider), new billet aluminum triples with 10mm less offset (better turning), new Pro Form exhaust with aluminum silencer, new wide pegs, new braided Terry cables, Renthall vintage bars, Magura controls, new Vintage Husky plastic, new seat foam (firm) and cover, very nice (but not perfect) gas tank, upgraded 76 fork valving, and a set of slightly used Metzeler tires.

Spent Sunday at the Little Brown Jug Enduro in South Carolina. first event for SETRA.
Plus side was they posted a $1500 prize money. First overall won $500!! This has to be a first for enduros.
No on the down side, what ever happened to time keeping? This was just one 60 mile motocross! It was so fast that most bikes came in without any rear brakes left. And what happened to a enduro going for 100 miles? Another thing, most of these bikes had a magic button on the handlebars, just push it and the motor starts.

| | | Identifying DG Heads...does anyone know a sure fire way to determine you are getting proper head before buying? To my knowledge DG never put any identification on heads past possibly a black magic marker description on under side? I have a DG head of what I was told was pre 79.....doesnt seem to fit any of my YZ80s...though it sure looks like a YZ80 head!

| C&J frame for the Honda XL 250/350 engines.

Hello Richard,
The reason I know it's a C&J is that early in '73 when the XL350 first came out I was approached by Clarke Simpkins Honda (Clarke Simpkins was the distributor of Honda products for British Columbia and Alberta at that time) Race director, who asked me to build an enduro frame and a motocross frame for the big single. What you see on my Curtis Racing website was the first enduro version, what you don't see is the later version of Enduro/MX/Desert Racer.
During the time I was building the bikes another racer friend shows up at my shop with a frame kit from California made by C&J. I have a picture of it somewhere. He had been road racing at Ontario motor Speedway in L.A. (now defunct) and had seen this C&J prototype in the paddock, being shown to several people.
He noticed, as did I, that the rear of the engine was held in a cradle which was mounted to the swing arm pivot and to the frame. The originator of that style of frame was Doug Schwerma of Champion Racing Frames, and he used that principle on all his Dirt Track racers.
One of the founders of C&J was a prevoius employee of Champion so there is the link. C&J went on to change the design of their frames.
I knew Doug Schwerma through Yamaha Motor Canada and we consulted on several joint projects particularly around Dirt Trackers. I never used that rear engine cradle idea on any of my frames, and that is how I know what frame you have!

Turns out there is such a thing as being TOO big for a bike.
Rebuilt top end on what appeared to be a tight bottom end. 15 minutes on engine total.
New tires,chain, painted frame nice looking wheels, New Uni filter, Renthal bars, etc.
The bad...side panels need to be painted, fenders are so-so and will need some jetting to clear up the top end.
This engine was checked out by Jim Deibert of Motocross East and he set up the ignition to perfection. The bike starts and idles perfectly, and will run great until the top end. I have been out of commission with a bad back or I would have this issue fixed. Thus the great price.
Included some spares including a spare bottom end.

| 1983 Honda CR480. This bike is a “survivor” in great original condition, with a few upgrades. New DG reproduction pipe and silencer, also has Answer SA spark arrestor. Suspension rebuilt by Precision Concepts.
Frame, subframe, footpegs freshly powdercoated. Have not ridden it since having this done.
Replaced all engine oil seals and carb bowl oring. Starts well, idles smooth, runs crisp, does not leak a drop. New Pro Taper bars in black, new grips. Axles and swingarm pivot all nice, greased, great shape. I’ve had bikes with corroded and seized bolts. You will not have any of those issues with this bike! You can look closely and see that this bike has had an easy life, sitting indoors, it is complete and has not been wrenched on. It is probably the first bore, but I am not going to take the cylinder off to see. I don’t think the head or cylinder has ever been off the engine.
I have the swingarm stickers, but I wanted to research a bit to make sure I put them on the correct side and in the right location. I have ran 4-5 tanks of fuel through it in the last couple of years, so it’s been ridden and is not “showroom” but a great base for a racer, or a good start on a first class restoration! Current CA green sticker. $2,000 firm, may trade for a nice, street legal Yamaha DT360.| | Dennis Henderson

I picked up a 75 Super Pioneer recently that has a pair of fine Curnutt shocks on it. The shocks are currently mounted upside down. I seem to remember hearing that they won't work properly this way - is this fact or fiction?
I also remember that they can be rebuilt with commonly available seals and ATF fluid. Does anyone know a source for the proper seal parts, or a suspension guy who regularly does Curnutt shock rebuilds?

| Original DG swingarm for '76-'78 CR125M. Will also work on '74-'75 models as a forward mount setup. Arm is in great shape with usual scratches and minor scuffs but no repairs, cracks, deep gouges, etc. A simple light buffing and bead blast will make it look quite good. Was going to use it on a future build, but am going another way with it. The only issue this arm has is one chain adjuster bolt got broken off at some point and will have to be easy-outed (is that the correct conjugation of "easy-out'?). If I can find what my son did with my set, I'll do it before I ship it. First to speak up and commit to $325 gets it. I'll ship to the lower 48 for another $15. Thanks.| | Doug Childress

| | | Hey, I need some good advice. This weekend was all I can stand. I've been racing this 1975 Honda CR125 since spring 09. I bought it from a fellow who had it set up for his 200 weight. Problem is I only weigh around 130 and I'm suffering big time. If anyone has the time to help me get this bike straightened out as far a suspension wise I would appreciate it. It has Works shocks on back and stock front forks. If we do this as a discussion it might help someone else in some way but if you would rather do it by emails or phone that would be fine too.
